Cleaning the bathroom is a household chore that most of us dread. As one of the busiest and most important rooms in the house, it can take a lot of time and effort to clean properly. With so many different types of surface to clean it means you need an variety of different products to do a good job. However have you ever wondered what all those harsh chemicals are doing to the health of you and your family, not to mention the environment?

Fortunately there are eco-friendly cleaning solutions that could actually save you money as they may already be in your cupboard at home. Here are five natural ways to get your bathroom sparklingly clean.

1. How To Clean A Toilet

Cleaning the toilet can be a challenge but the bicarbonate of soda in your kitchen cupboard is more than up to the job. When mixed with water the soda cuts through dirt and grease but when used neat it is slightly abrasive so can be used to scrub difficult stains.

To keep your toilet clean simply put eight teaspoons of soda into the pan and leave overnight. Bicarbonate of soda can also be sprinkled onto a damp cloth to clean the toilet seat and cistern and then wiped with a wet cloth.

2. How To Clean A Bathroom Floor

Whether you have vinyl, laminate or ceramic tiled floors then white vinegar makes an excellent cleaner as it is a natural disinfectant and stain remover. Grab a bucket and mix eight teaspoons of vinegar in with three litres of hot water. Then mop the floor as you normally would.

Don’t be tempted to use malt vinegar though or your bathroom will end up smelling like a chip shop!

The acid in lemon juice gives the fruit its sour taste and makes it a cost-effective fresh smelling cleaner. Remove the soap scum from your tiles by simply rubbing them with a cut lemon and rinsing off.

To deal with stained grouting then make a runny paste with bicarbonate of soda and water and gently scrub with an old toothbrush.

4. How To Clean A Bathroom Mirror

These days many mirror and glass cleaning products will have vinegar in them so why not just use vinegar in the first place. Get those mirrors and windows sparkling with a simple 50/50 water and vinegar solution dispensed into an old spray bottle. Once squirted on the mirror you’ll get a streak-free finish by scrubbing with old newspaper.

You can also use this method to make your bathroom taps sparkle.

5. How To Freshen The Air In A Bathroom

It isn’t necessary to grab an air freshener spray to cover up smells with synthetic fragrances.  Simply lighting a match is a good way to deal with any unpleasant odour emergencies. The sulphurous smell of the ignition effectively masks any bad smells – although maybe try lighting two matches if it is particularly bad!

For a longer-lasting fragrance then simply dab some of your favourite essential oil onto your bathroom light-bulbs. When switched on the heat from the bulb will diffuse the fragrance and leave a pleasant aroma.

Before trying any of these cleaning methods it is always best to test them on a hidden area first to make sure that no damage occurs.
